In 2007, the Springfield Board of Education and Administration led staff, students, parents, business and community leaders, and senior citizens through a strategic planning process that helped develop a five-year strategic/Continuous Improvement Plan. Emphasized in the plan were systemic approaches to integrate literacy, character, and safety into all aspects of the district’s classroom-based and extracurricular programming. That plan is updated each year to ensure that the needs of students, staff, and the community are well served. For elementary-aged students enrichment is offered: within the classroom, through grade-level acceleration, through subject-level acceleration, within the “L.E.A.P.” program (Learning Enrichment Accelerated Program).
At Springfield Middle School, students receive enrichment through: project-based learning classes are offered as well as “L.E.A.P,” Honors classes, Students can receive high school credit for completing Algebra I in 8th Grade Grade- and subject-level acceleration is also available when appropriate.
Enrichment for Springfield High School students is seen through: Honors classes, Advanced Placement courses, and Post-Secondary Options classes through local colleges/universities. Springfield High School offers one of the only nationally recognized J.R.O.T.C. leadership and character programs within the state of Ohio.
Did you know that Springfield Schools offers a full compliment of foreign language classes? At Springfield Middle School, students receive a full year of study in foreign languages including opportunities to learn Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. Students at Springfield High Schools may select French, German, and Spanish.
Technology is a key aspect of both teaching and learning in Springfield K-12 classrooms? SmartBoard technology, as well as desktop. laptop and, in SHS science labs, hand-held computers assist faculty and students in exploring all aspects of learning. For parents, ProgressBook was introduced in 2008 – using a link from the district’s website, parents can regularly follow each student’s progress in the classroom.
Grants and support from the Springfield Schools Foundation and partners within the community allow the district to offer innovative literacy programs, the Laws of Life contest, CSI: Springfield, and the elementary school chess clubs?
